Abstract

The increasing costs of energy and the need to reduce the ecological footprint of cities, the search for technologies to reduce energy consumption for cooling is increasingly relevant, especially in cities like Palmas- TO, which has very high temperatures throughout the year. The implementation of techniques that guarantee the passive cooling of buildings can contribute to these objectives. This paper presents the results of an experimental campaign, lasting about 9 months, during which the effect of natural ventilation and reflective paint was evaluated, both when applied individually and when combined with each other. For this purpose, two identical test cells were set up in Palmas-TO. One was used to implement the different techniques of passive cooling and the other remained unchanged, in order to allow comparing the results. It was found that when applied individually, natural cross ventilation was the most effective at night and reflective paint showed better performance during daytime. When the reflective paint was combined with natural ventilation (crossed, crossed only at night and by chimney effect), there was an improvement in the performance, ensuring greater temperature decreases compared to the control cell. Considering the combined techniques, the one that showed the greatest daily average difference was the reflective paint with crossed natural ventilation. However, if the effectiveness of the techniques is evaluated considering the night-time and daytime periods separately, ventilation by chimney effect leads to greater differences during daytime.
