Abstract

The item of the Brazilian standard NBR 15575-1, which deals with the thermal performance of buildings, does not distinguish between naturally ventilated and air-conditioned buildings. The objective is to test the effect of the increase in the rate of air renewal on the thermal performance of a multifamily vertical building of the typology of 1 bedroom for the city of Maceió/ AL/ BR, designed with bioclimatic principles recommended for the bioclimatic zone 8. The method consisted of simulations with the EnergyPlus program, considering 1, 5 and 10 air changes per hour, in the rooms of six different 1-bedroom apartments. It was found that in the rooms oriented to the South, the increase in the rate of air renewal did not reduce the internal temperature, close to peak hours, but brought the internal and external temperatures closer together in the night and early morning; in those oriented to the East, the increase in the rate of air renewal significantly reduced the internal temperatures, after the peak of the external temperature; in those oriented to the North, the increase in the rate of air renewal caused almost no changes in the internal temperature of one of them and in the other it caused effects similar to those seen in the other rooms. It is concluded that the rooms oriented to the East, when presenting the worst performances, contradict what is recommended by the norm; the increase in the rate of air renewal did not always improve the behavior of internal temperatures at times close to the peak of external temperature; however, they contribute to the increase in air speed and night cooling of the building. The need to revise the Brazilian standard for naturally ventilated residential buildings is reinforced.
