ANÁLISE ESTATÍSTICA DA INTENSIDADE DO USO DE ENERGIA DE EDIFICAÇÕES ESCOLARES NO BRASIL:
PROPOSIÇÃO DE BENCHMARKING SIMPLIFICADO

This study presents a statistical analysis of a dataset representing the Brazilian school building stock. Information regarding energy consumption, gross-floor area, number of students and climate zone of 2,445 schools were used to calculate the energy use intensity indicator (EUI) in terms of gross-floor area and number of students. A log-transformation was applied to assure the normality of the data. Those indicators were analysed through normality testing, histogram developing, statistical synthesis metrics, and simple normalisation benchmarking. A variance test (ANOVA) verified the variability of the EUI regarding different climate zones. Results showed typical values of EUI in terms of gross-floor area and number of students of the school building stock in Brazil, and the statistical benchmarking presented limit values to classify the operational performance of buildings from “A” (higher performance) to “E” (lower performance). The ANOVA test evidenced significant variability in EUI considering different climatic zones. Conclusions pointed out that the method employed for benchmarking is valid as a first approach. Still, it is limited once it does not consider climatic variables as a parameter, which was identified as an important factor in the statistical test. In this way, there is a need for a robust method for benchmarking buildings in Brazil.
