Kindergarten schools are low-complex buildings which represents a significative share of energy consumption for the municipal administration. Labelling the energy performance of these buildings helps to choose the energy efficiency strategies to be implemented. This article aims to analyse the energy classification of kindergarten buildings in Florianópolis, using two indicators: (1) annual energy consumption per floor-plan area and (2) annual energy consumption per number of students. The buildings were rated on a scale from A to E, considering a statistical benchmarking method and the two performance indicators tested. The results showed that the sample classified according to the floor-plan area was better adapted to the normal distribution and had lower standard deviation. As for the indicator related to the number of students, data calibration must be performed, considering full-time and part-time students in a specific way. When analysing a specific building, the results of both indicators must be interpreted together, because even with a reduced floor-plan area or number of students, there is a Basal Energy Consumption for the building to function, which also influences this classification. Before choosing the indicator to be used for further studies, it is recommended to know the building stock and the objective of the analyses and, if it is meant to implement energy efficiency strategies, an individualized study of the building should be carried out.
