PÁTIO COMO ESTRATÉGIA TÉRMICA PASSIVA EM REGIÃO DE CLIMA TROPICAL

Abstract

This research focuses on assessing the courtyard’s potential to mitigate temperatures in tropical regions, as a design strategy responsive to the local climate, characterized by high temperatures throughout the year. The objects of study are two courtyards with different shape factors (height-to-length ratio), one of which is 1.18 and the other of 0.11. The objective is comparatively evaluating the cooling and heating potential capacity provided by the two courtyards, in extreme conditions of cold and heat. The methodology consists of surveying the environmental and design characteristics, accompanied by monitoring the microclimate variables indoors and outdoors in two courtyards. The form factor influences the daily insolation received and the shading provided inside the courtyard, exerting a strong influence on the potential for cooling and passive thermal heating. On a cold day, the courtyard with a 1.18 form factor provides a greater heating effect in all periods. In that with 0.11 form factor, during the day, the effect is warming and, at night, passive cooling, which gradually decreases throughout the night. On a hot day, the 1.18 form factor courtyard provides greater passive thermal cooling in the daytime and some hours at night. In that with 0.11 form factor, however, an opposite effect is observed: passive heating during the day, and, cooling during the night.
