Abstract

The paper presents the results of the final phase study of the use of pictograms to express photometric units and their relationships in energy save lamps packaging. It corresponds to the last stage of an interdisciplinary research that has, as energy efficiency strategy, the improvement of the visual communication of the products available on the market, stimulating the diffusion and assimilation by the population of new technologies of primary light sources. This research collaborates with science and technology education and popularization, stimulating changes in population consumption pattern, as well as, the production of goods and services currently offered. Changes that, along with new habits, bring improvements to the environment. The study of pictograms adoption is a development of previous research phases that showed visual communication mistakes analyzing existing regulations of lamp packaging information compared to what is produced by manufacturers and distributed in the market. The goal of this phase is to evaluate the effectiveness of the suggested pictograms, analyzing the graphic quality of the signs, their easiness of reading and their understanding by the public. The methodology used is the public opinion research without identifying the participants, carried out through extensive direct documentation, with the application of a questionnaire with logical and objective multiple-choice questions. It uses the simple random sampling technique, without repetition control, where the sampling frame is the literate population who consume light bulbs for their homes. At the present moment, the results indicate that the pictograms are effective. The understanding of the signs by the public has been expressive. The pictograms were interpreted correctly, almost entirely, by more than 50% of the participants.
