Energy consumption of equipment and lighting in classrooms of a Public University

Abstract

One of the most important factors contributing to the discrepancies between the actual energy consumption of buildings and the estimates made through computational simulations is the influence of users during system operation. Currently, in university classrooms, students are increasingly using devices such as personal computers and mobile phones, whose energy consumption is often not accounted for in consumption models. This study aimed to survey and evaluate electricity usage patterns in university classrooms. The object of this case study was a Study Center at the State University of Londrina. Three different types of classrooms were selected, which were monitored over a two-week period. The use of projectors, fans, lighting, personal computers, and mobile phones was monitored during 3 weeks. The study concluded that the energy consumption of laptops is significant and should not be neglected in energy studies of buildings.
