Abstract

Self-leveling mortars used in flooring systems are characterized by high fluidity and, therefore, the use of fines is essential. The use of fillers generated as by-products of stone crushers in quarries, such as basaltic filler, can be an alternative source of fines in these mortars. This study aimed to investigate the influence of the sand content and the partial replacement of sand by crushed basalt filler. The filler was used in contents of 4.5%, 9% and 18% of the mass of total solid in self-leveling mortars. The properties evaluated were: fluidity and compressive strength at 1 and 28 days. The results obtained show that the sand content must be limited and the paste content sufficient to guarantee the mixture fluidity. In the fresh state, the increase in the crushed filler content increases the amount of superplasticizer for the same consistency. However, higher filler contents result in higher mechanical strength. Thus, it was found that the crushed basalt filler has the potential to be used in self-leveling mortars.
