Abstract

The process of urban development was marked by rapid urbanization, population growth and environmental imbalance. As a mechanism for evaluating the sustainability of these cities and supporting planning decisions related to the urban environment, evaluation tools have emerged to guide economic, social and environmental development. Latin American countries represent one of the most urbanized regions in the world, where the prevalence of social tension and the critical conditions of habitability distinguish them from other localities. This article presents the aspects that justify the need for adequate indicators to the context of Latin American urban communities and the need to seek to value indicators related to economy and well-being, since the existing evaluation tools generally have a strong environmental focus. Six tools for evaluating urban sustainability were analyzed. It was concluded that in addition to the need to assess the relevance of the indicators to the Latin American reality, weighting should also be observed in order to make it possible to adapt to the different realities of the Latin American countries.
