Challenges of offsite production for mass customisation

Abstract

Mass customization (MC) aims to diversify production while maintaining competitive costs and deadlines. However, several companies find it difficult to implement it. Thus, the objective is to understand what the biggest challenges for the implementation of CM in the offsite production process are. For this, 14 specialists related to offsite construction were interviewed. The biggest problems identified are: balancing what must be produced at the factory and on the construction site, material acquisition, having projects finalized before the start of the production process, standardization and flexibility. This knowledge can be used by companies and researchers to support the definition of CM strategies.
