Abstract

In Brazil, as in many other countries, residential buildings consume a significant part of all energy produced, mainly for water heating systems. The present study compared five water heating systems used in Brazilian homes: electric, solar energy, natural gas, LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) and boilers. The comparison was made through the simplified Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the alternatives, considering stages for which it was possible to obtain data in relation to the emission of carbon dioxide. The results indicated that the boiler system is the best environmentally friendly option.
