Daylighting circadian stimulus in higher education classrooms

Abstract

Daylight is the primary driver of both the visual and circadian systems. The impact of light on the circadian system can be measured using the Equivalent Melanopic Lux (EML) metric, which depends on light intensity and its spectral power density. The ALFA plugin for Rhinoceros allows for the calculation of this metric and provides a relationship between photopic and melanopic light (M/P). Given the importance of the cognitive performance for learning, this research aimed to investigate how daylight in classrooms influences students alertness. Computational simulations were conducted using the ALFA plugin for four classrooms with different orientations. The results showed that the investigated classrooms had insufficient natural light for circadian stimulation with higher availability of circadian stimulus near the windows and insufficiency in areas farther away from them. To ensure satisfactory performance for users, the need to complement the ambient lighting with artificial lighting was recognized.
