Exploring BIM and Mixed Reality: trends and applications in the construction industry

Abstract

Building information modeling (BIM) has played a transformative role in the construction industry, boosting several aspects of the field, especially innovation and competitiveness. The integration of Mixed reality (MR), which combines Virtual reality (VR) and Augmented reality (AR) with BIM, stands out as an interdisciplinary approach that improves understanding of design and construction processes. This work aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of research involving BIM and mixed reality (including AR and VR) in the context of Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC), guiding the sector. The methodology used was bibliometrics integrated with a bibliographic review. The contributions explain indicators of the adoption and application of BIM and mixed reality in the AEC domain. These indicators include publication data by year and country, most cited periodical, analysis of the technology used and identification of growth trends, and application areas aligned with the uses of BIM, which benefit from integrating BIM with MR.
