Welding flux slag (EFS) is a waste product from the submerged arc welding industry, possessing the potential to inflict environmental harm if inadequately disposed. Considering some similarities between EFS and blast furnace slag, this work aims to evaluate the possibility of reusing EFS as a partial substitute for Portland cement. The cement with EFS was subjected to compressive strength tests, water absorption, sulfuric acid attack, thermogravimetry, carbonation, isothermal calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the cement composed of 6% EFS meets the compressive strength requirements of CP II-E 40 cement at 28 days and the cement composed of 35% EFS meets the requirements of CP III 25 at 28 days and the CP III 40 to 91 days. Increasing the EFS content delays the onset of setting, increases porosity, and reduces compressive strength and carbonation resistance. The reuse of EFS by the cement industry can contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions, in addition to reducing the risk of soil contamination from inadequate disposal of EFS.
