Characterization of water consumption in a residential building: case study in Joinville, Santa Catarina

Abstract

Water is a scarce and necessary resource, and it is important to understand how it is consumed in residential buildings. This article aims to identify the per capita consumption index (CI) of 16 apartments in a residential building in the city of Joinville/SC, over 26 months, and to relate it to the characteristics of residents, as well as to climatic factors. Monthly water consumption data were obtained from the condominium administration, while climatic data were obtained from a meteorological station in the city. Furthermore, a questionnaire was applied to residents to identify the characteristics that may influence water consumption in apartments. The average consumption index obtained was 181.75 liters/resident/day. The presence of men exhibited an influence directly proportional to the consumption index. On the other hand, the existence of elderly residents indicated a tendency towards a reduction in per capita water consumption. The average air temperature and accumulated precipitation showed a positive low correlation with mean per capita water consumption.
