Public policy makers and researchers have long been struggling to find alternative, sustainable means of transportation. This research proposes to evaluate the current state of rail transport, regarding social sustainability engagement. The main data gathering technique used in this research was systematic literature review. Based on this method, fifteen articles published from 2017 to 2023 have been selected, which allowed to assess them in sections. As a result, this research has led to conclude that social sustainability represents the latest emergent keyword in the evaluation of rail transport, and it has lately been taken more seriously into account, especially in developed countries, such as United Kingdom, USA and China, but it still lacks a significant number of studies on the social life cycle of this transport mode. This dataset exposes a few gaps, notably the lack of research on the categories and subcategories of concerned parties in the assessment of the social impacts of rail transport projects.
