Abstract

The lack of adequate consideration of solar radiation accessibility in Brazilian urban plans reflects a significant gap in urban planning. This study aims to characterize the influence of urban growth in this aspect. The adopted methodology involves modeling a real scenario, focusing on the average density in Florianópolis for the years 2003, 2013, and 2023. Building heights are determined through field surveys and aerial image analysis. Results show an 8% decrease in radiation availability per square meter on rooftops from 2003 to 2013 and 15% from 2023 to 2013. For walls, there's an approximately 9% decrease from 2003 to 2013 and 12% from 2013 to 2023. Planning the urban morphology of the built environment is crucial for transitioning to a climate-adapted urban setting that utilizes climate as a tool for energy production, either actively or passively. These findings underscore the urgent need to incorporate solar radiation accessibility in urban planning to promote healthier and more sustainable cities.
