Abstract

Socio-technical approaches are advised when implementing production models based on methods that require workforce autonomy to pull or stop processes. Hence, the current study discusses the acclimatization of new workers in the work environment, which is a topic often overlooked during lean implementation. The main objective is to highlight the role of onboarding processes to propose an acclimatization model suitable for the construction sector. Categorized as exploratory and qualitative, this research uses the Case Study approach to refine the proposed model. Initially, a literature review on the topic is carried out to describe the main practices recommended. These were used to draft an initial version of the acclimatization model, which was afterwards analysed by the management teams of two construction companies. As a result, adjustments were made in the selected practices to make the final model more feasible and appropriate to the peculiarities of the construction sector. Through this research we hope to highlight the onboarding process as a readiness factor for lean construction due to its role in rapidly engaging the workforce in the work environment.
