Abstract

With the higher demand for commercial buildings with more energy efficiency, the construction sector is updating itself and meeting such expectations. However, it is a complex subject, where several variables are examined, such as solar radiation incidence on the building, air conditioning systems, and construction systems. Besides, there is a lack of discussion about the extent to which the occupation pattern of commercial buildings affects the energy performance of the constructive strategies adopted in the design phase. The energy consumption of HVAC systems undergoes great variation according to the building occupation routine. This study aims to evaluate how the variation in the pattern use can affect the performance of energy efficiency strategies. To this objective, three types of occupancy patterns and two types of glazed façades, laminated and insulated glazing, were simulated in the EnergyPlus. The results showed a variation in consumption among the strategies adopted when the use pattern varied and it was also possible to observe that in pattern of daytime use only the consumption was lower when compared to the building occupied in two periods.
