Abstract

User behavior is one of the determinants of energy consumption in buildings. User interactions with the building can be motivated by several factors, such as culture and building characteristics. Research in several countries seeks to understand user behavior and its influence on thermal and energy performance of buildings. In Brazil, there are still few studies in this area. Therefore, this work presents results of the pilot study of qualitative research on user behavior in multifamily homes in Santa Maria, RS. A structured interview was conducted with nine respondents, residents of houses with similar construction characteristics and surroundings. The main adjustments reported by the respondents are similar to those addressed in the international literature, except for particularities of the artificial conditioning systems used in the country. A difference was identified between the adjustments for heat and for cold discomfort. Varied and mainly spatial and environmental adjustments for heat discomfort were identified, while the adjustments for cold are predominantly individual, with no direct relationship with devices and construction systems. The results may contribute to the development of instruments that assist in the theme research.
