Abstract

The vegetated facades can bring thermal benefits to the buildings, as they act as a shading mechanism, thermal insulation, wind barrier or evaporative cooling. Among the various types currently used in architecture, this work will compare three systems: direct green facade (FVD), indirect green facade (FVI) and modular live wall (PVM). Therefore, the objective of this article is to evaluate the impact of using different types of vegetated facades on the thermal behavior of a residential environment, inserted in the bioclimatic zone 2, using computer simulation in the EnergyPlus software, based on configuration parameters previously used by other researches. For this purpose, the results of internal air temperature, internal surface temperature of the wall and heat flow of the building were compared without the presence of vegetation and with the application of the three techniques. The results showed that the use of vegetation tends to make the surfaces more thermally stable, soften the temperature peaks and promote lower heat gains during the hottest periods and lower heat losses in the coldest periods. Thus, it is concluded that its use brings benefits for thermal comfort and energy efficiency in buildings inserted in places with a subtropical climate.
