Abstract

This article aims to analyse the use of open-source platforms in architectural projects, focusing specifically on initiatives related to modular construction through digital fabrication. The hypothesis is that many of these initiatives are intrinsically linked to principles of sustainability and collaboration, and can make significant contributions toward addressing the climatic, economic, and social challenges faced by the construction sector. Based on a systematic literature review, the study seeks to understand: (i) which conceptual principles underpin these strategies; (ii) what technological resources are employed to support project development; (iii) which concrete sustainable initiatives can be identified; and (iv) what gaps and challenges exist in terms of their dissemination and implementation. The results reveal that the most recurring principles are democratization, collaboration, customization, and sustainability. A wide variety of uses of the term platform was observed, with particular emphasis on modular construction systems made available online for digital fabrication. The study concludes that the dissemination and practical application of these platforms largely depend on a combination of governmental incentives and strategies for professional training and capacity building.
