This article deals with a methodological experience used in the extension project developed at the Edmundo Bittencourt Municipal School, located in the Benfica neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, whose title is – Heritage Education: Looking at the world through the wall. Through didactic methods, whether for university students or for students in public schools, the aim was to integrate the concept of valuing heritage (material or immaterial) with the value of belonging to the local school community, through the creation of paintings on the school wall, aiming to improve the quality of the school space. The objective is the transformation of the students themselves through academic knowledge that transcends the content disseminated in the classroom, through social transformation and a sense of belonging to the community for having participated in the intervention of repairing the school wall. The method used was strategically constructed by the teachers of the architecture and urban planning course at UNISUAM and by the pedagogical team of the Edmundo Bittencourt Municipal School, where playful and enjoyable actions were applied to enable the commitment of both university students and mainly of the children belonging to the school unit contemplated. The result indicates the success of the experiment, even without its conclusion, through the mobilization achieved and the degree of satisfaction expressed by the members of the extension.
