Abstract

Developing countries, particularly in the last decades of XX century, witnessed high urbanization rates, which culminated in the chaotic growth of cities. Among the activities affected by this development model is the movement of people and goods, which concentrates a large energy demand and a high volume of emissions in the city. The problem was accentuated with the election of automobiles as the preferred means of transport. The model contradicts the findings of extensive literature considering that active and collective means of transport are related to much better rates of energy consumption and emissions than cars and, therefore, would be considered more sustainable. In this regard, the paper uses literature review to analyze how socioeconomic and urban form aspects are related to travel behavior and which public policy would be interesting to shape it. Theconclusion found that the aspects that seems to be related to more efficient travel behaviors are density, land use, income, efficient public transport and fuel price. However, it takes a deep study in each case, since this issue is subordinate to cultural, economic and history aspects for each region.
