Abstract

If the modern movement defended a vertical relation, where the architect could autocratically define the design of cities and their buildings, from the middle of the twentieth century these practices will be harshly criticized. Participatory approaches to city management are increasingly valued as responses to an increasingly complex, pluralistic and diverse world. The architectural inadequacy of the large modernist residential complexes in the face of the needs of its inhabitants often appears in professional, academic and community debates. Thus, the process gains relevance and begins to be debated, independently of the product. If, on the one hand, one has to consider a greater number of variables, the way in which one seeks to achieve the result gains as much importance as the result itself, which becomes unforeseeable. At the same time, authors like William Mitchel, Nicholas Negroponte, Yona Friedman and Christopher Alexander, defend the union of participatory processes and computational tools. This Union, which has been debated until now with authors such as José Pinto Duarte and Branko Kolarevic, brings with it the concept of mass customization for architecture and urbanism. In this way, the present work intends to reflect on participatory processes enhanced by digital tools, from an experiment: an algorithm associated to a constructive system that allows the customization of an architecture. The experiment will take advantage of another parallel research that since 2015 has sought to adapt different international experiences of constructive solutions based on a subtractive method of digital manufacturing. It is hoped, therefore, to contribute to the discussions both on the participation of users and on the appropriation of new technologies.
