This article presents a partial result of research developed from 2015 to 2017, with the objective to propose guidelines of Strategic Design for Sustainability in Micro and Small Enterprises (MPEs) of the Furniture Sector of Uberlândia/MG. These companies have faced managerial, organizational and leadership problems, which result in a high volume of waste, generally disposed in unsuitable locations. The research investigated the possible contributions of design as a strategic agent, proposing through sustainable and economic alternatives for the reduction of environmental impacts. The methodology adopted included literature review, case studies, field research, analyzes and elaboration of strategic design guidelines. The results point out the need of new businesses practices and the difficulty of adopting the strategies proposed by the study. It is also confirmed the lack of social awareness and of a systemic vision that contribute to build a more sustainable future scenario. Among its contributions, the work presents a Manual of Good Practices that sets out some basic orientations for the furniture microenterprises improvement.
