Abstract

The objective of this paper is to analyze the effects of distinct frontal setbacks in the aesthetics of public open space according to groups of people with different levels and types of educational background. The data were collected through internet questionnaires for residents of Porto Alegre/RS, totaling 171 respondents: 28 architects, 120 non-architects with university education and 23 respondents without university education. For the identification of the preference for the different setbacks, we included (i) two videos representing paths with buildings that are not aligned in relation to the public walk; (ii) two videos representing paths with simultaneously aligned and recessed buildings with respect to the public walk; and (iii) two videos representing paths with buildings in alignment. Data were analyzed through non-parametric statistical tests in the SPSS program. The results show, for example, that the group of architects tends to prefer the paths with edifices next to the alignment, whereas the groups of non-architects with university formation and without university formation tend to prefer the paths with buildings set back in relation to the sidewalk. Finally, the analysis carried out allows a better understanding of the implications of the different setbacks in the aesthetics of open public spaces.
