Abstract

Cities fulfill a relevant role facing climate change in the microscale regarding mitigation strategies, with a decrease in greenhouse gases emissions, as well as in adaptation interventions, adjusting process to anticipate associated climate related impacts. Although in many urban areas, such as the megacity of Sao Paulo, Brazil, the social an environmental challenges remain unsolved, bound to be exacerbated by climate change, one can realize that urbanization can be an opportunity for mitigation and adaptation aligned to the sustainable development goals. In this paper, the authors aim to discuss some of the main problems and the possible opportunities related to the urbanization of the city of Sao Paulo, adapting to the climate extremes, in particular those related to urban warming and its impacts in thermal comfort and energy use, also approaching the role of public policies. Starting from a review of research experiences in the city of São Paulo focused on the relations among urban planning, urban and building design and climate adaptation for thermal comfort, this paper discusses how the green infrastructure and the benefits of urban density can be explored, aligning urban density with microclimate amenities.
