Abstract

This research is part of a Master's dissertation that presents a discussion about the use of the "Flipped Classroom" methodology in Environmental Comfort disciplines, so that some practical and pedagogical problems, which hinder its integration with the design disciplines in Architecture and Urbanism courses, can be remedied or minimized, while the classroom becomes a design studio. Among the questions investigated in the dissertation, this research is limited to the approach of the generating tools of decision support in the field of bioclimatology and solar geometry used in the proposed design activities in the classroom, with the objective of investigating the applicability and contribution of these tools within the context of “Flipped Classroom”. The methodology consisted in the planning and application of the teaching strategy with the appropriation of the selected tools, evaluation of the projects delivered by the students as a result of the practical activities elaborated in the classroom, and investigation of their level of satisfaction with the method, more particularly with regard to the proposed activities and used tools. Among other issues, the results suggest that some aspects of the proposed systematization have been successful, such as the use of the bioclimatic tabulation, and the appropriation of the shadow tools of the software SketchUp and printed solar diagrams. However, the software Sol-Ar, although important for the project of solar protections, was not efficient for the study of shadow masks of the built environment. Likewise, the modeling difficulties of the software SunTool, as well as its non-use in the video recordings, have impaired its use as a study tool for the shadow masks in general.
