Abstract

The thermal comfort is considered as a human requirement in the field of architecture, since it is part in a set of necessary features that provides well-being to people inside buildings In school buildings, there is even greater concerning with thermal comfort conditions, since teaching-learning activities require environments to be adequate in their temperature and humidity levels for this activity. Thus, the empirical observation in buildings located at region from the northeastern semiarid climate arouses the attention of research in this article, with the purpose of investigate if the built environment of the school provides well conditions of thermal comfort in the inner spaces. The region of study representing the semiarid climate is the municipality of Caicó/RN/Brazil and the investigation is performed in two public high schools. This work aims to identify the thermal performance from the educational built environment having the adaptive thermal comfort approach as the evaluation method in the classrooms. The methodological procedures are driven by the ASHRAE 55, where is found the relation within the operative temperature of the environment and the comfort zone obtained from the external climate conditions. The environmental parameters collected to develop the investigation where performed in two periods of 2018: the first period is less critical about the climate conditions and the second is more critical. The results founded put the schools in a comparative perspective within the schools, the classrooms in the CEJA school presents a better performance about the correlation within the comfort zone and the operative temperature, meanwhile the EECCAM school presents less performance because the operative temperature’s behavior exceeds the comfort limit with ventilation in the two moments of data and the afternoons as the moment with more thermal discomfort. Also, in this study is considered that the envelope participates actively as the aspect of better or worse performance of thermal comfort inside the educational buildings.
