Abstract

The Brazilian standard of building performance, NBR 15575 (ABNT, 2013), establishes evaluation methods for thermal performance which, among them, the simulation method is the most appropriate according to the academic community. However, the simulation method does not define some essential input parameters and its performance classification indicator does not consider the thermal comfort concepts to the building users. This work aims to compare the thermal performance indicators of social housing, using the normative method, with thermal comfort indicators of the building users, using an alternative approach. Two social housing projects were analyzed in the four different bioclimatic zones from Mato Grosso do Sul (ZB3, ZB5, ZB6 e ZB8) using the two simulation methods; also, the sensitivity of the input variables was examined in the performance and thermal comfort by the analysis of variance. The results showed some level of correlation between performance and thermal comfort, which could be related to the fact that the most influent variables are similar in both cases. The main differences in the results occur because the standard considers only the peak temperature, in the summer’s case, and this situation occurs during the afternoon, and in the alternative method, in which is considered the occupation schedule, the bedrooms are mostly occupied during the night. This analysis shows that is possible to use thermal performance indicators for social housing based in thermal comfort concepts, but the heat gains, occupation schedule and equipment’s usage are core information to approximate the computer simulation to actual operation of the house.
