Abstract

The use of sunscreens is a strategy to reduce energy consumption in buildings. In this sense, this work evaluates the influence of external solar protections on commercial buildings in the Brazilian Bioclimatic Zone 2, when used with other alternative design solutions to reduce energy consumption. It was simulated an office building in the real situation without shading devices, comparing it with one situation of use to shading devices and two other situations. One of them, in the real condition, with replacement of the air conditioners and luminaires by equivalents of less energy consumption and the other, considering these substitutions plus the addition of external shading devices. The results showed that the situation of shading devices use is beneficial in the summer, but in winter, this condition is not evident. However analyzing the thermal balance of both cases, the solution is positive. Together with the other evaluated project solutions, the use of these elements is extremely important in the reduction of thermal gains in the summer. In winter, although it does not show a more favorable thermal balance, it does not stand out much from the real situation. It should also be considered that user behavior is very relevant to the process.
