Abstract

On of the challenge of openings design is to maximize the acess of natural light, in order to improve the internal quality of the environment, while keeping the environment free of excessive glare and contrasts. However, quantifying and characterizing the perception of brightness in visual activity is still a challenge in researches, mainly because it is a subjective parameter, relative to the active position of the occupant. The purpose of this research is to consider dynamic users in work environments, verifying the influence of the visualization time and look direction in glare probability. For data obtaining, evaluations were performed in an experimental environment, where the twenty six volunteers were monitored while performing the pre-defined office tasks. The gaze movements were recorded with the aid of Eye-Tracker devices. Through the High Dynamic Range (HDR) technique, surface brightness was mapped and the glare probability index (DGP) was obtained for each scene. Questionnaires were also applied with the purpose of correlate users' satisfaction. It was found that when performing a task, the user keeps his eyes fixed on the work plan regardless of the luminances found. When asking for a break or when talking on the phone, the look became more dispersed, varying the displayed areas. The openings were visualized when they were part of the task background or when they did not contain extreme values of luminance. It was concluded that the visualization time weighting by the DGP value indicated a reduction of up to 100% of the DGP-weighted to the DGPstatic. The weighted DGP values were closer to the satisfaction votes expressed by the participants, emphasizing the importance of considering vision’s directions and visualization's time in the index.
