Abstract

The choice of clothing is one of the most effective passive strategies for occupant adapting to the thermal environment. Clothing influences heat transfers through conduction, radiation, convection, and evaporation. In dwellings, social restrictions are more flexible, residents enjoy greater freedom in the clothing composition, and they can easily adjust to daily and seasonal climatic variations. Therefore, this research analyzed the contribution of the clothing insulation level in the adaptive model and the PMV / PPD model to verify the need for annual cooling or heating of dwellings in tropical climates. The hourly climatic data from eight cities in Paraíba were analyzed using the thermal comfort models proposed by ASHRAE standard 55/ 2017. For this purpose, the software Rhinoceros 5 / Grasshopper and the pluggin LadyBug 0.0.65 was used. It was found that the use of an expanded range of thermal acceptability, with clothing insulation values between 0.15 and 3.55 clo in the PMV / PPD model, allowed a closer verification of the real behavior of users, besides allowing the simulation at the nighttime, with adjustments in the rate of metabolic activity and bedding systems consisting of bed, bedding and sleepwear.Among the cities evaluated, the annual percentage of hours in which the environment is thermally acceptable varied from 38.6% to 84.5%, for 90% of acceptability and from 57.3% to 95.6% for 80% of acceptability for the adaptive model, while with the PMV / PPD method the variation was from 83.3% to 99.9%.
