Abstract

Due to climate change and the efficiencies and sustainability of current construction polices, a gradual and significant increase in adaptive thermal comfort research is being performed. However, recent studies have observed that adaptations are influenced by aspects that are difficult to measure, such as rules of social conduct, the operability of the building, the user's knowledge of means of conditioning and the user's exposure to constant environments with active conditioning. In this sense, this research aimed to explore, through the application of 593 questionnaires and semi-structured classification with users of public buildings in the city of Campina Grande -PB, the strategies pointed out by the participants to achieve thermal comfort when in discomfort in cold and hot situations in residential spaces, work, and local public universities. It was observed that social behavior negatively impacts adaptive opportunities, making it easier to achieve comfort in residential spaces. The importance of clothing as an adaptive method, and the use of mechanical means. Strict temperature maintenance policies may be less efficient and do not guarantee comfort and it is essential that people can adapt to the space. Simultaneously, the population's general lack of knowledge about bioclimatic strategies related to building was detected. Of the respondents, 43% of the strategies listed referred to active conditioning methods, showing a strong tendency to associate comfort with active mechanisms. Passive techniques stood out for their being associated with possible benefits obtained through ventilation, yet the public did not generally present specific know-how concerning enhancing ventilation.
