Abstract

After fifty years after the popularization of the glazed façades in non-residential buildings, glass is widely used in contemporary architecture. Since the 1980s, technologies of innovative translucent materials have been developed as a solution to solve issues related to thermal and luminous comfort, because the utilization of these technologies allow the control of unwanted solar radiation and are the future towards the increase of energy efficiency in buildings. Although, there are still questions regarding the application of these materials in office buildings in Brazil related to their thermal and luminous performance. Therefore, this article aims to present an overview of the innovative transparent and translucent materials employed on façades of nonresidential buildings. The main contribution of this article is to show which materials are promising to be utilized in non-residential building within the Brazilian context. Through the literature review an overview of the main innovative transparent materials is discussed, which can be divided into categories: smart windows and light redirection systems. It was identified that the electrochromic glazing sets other smart window technologies apart due to the widest range of the G-Value and Light Transmission controls. The microstructured light redirecting systems are a promising technology because they allow a deeper reach of natural light into the depth of the indoor environment. It was concluded that there are few studies testing the applicability of these innovative materials in Brazil and the discussion regarding it must be deepened
