Abstract

This research proposes the application of the principle of lean construction philosophy to minimize or eliminate all activities that do not add value by reducing transportation activities and its waste. For this, this work evaluates throught a empirical study the utility of the otimization technique based on Genetic Algorithms (AG) to optimize transport distances and consequently reduce transport waste in construction processes. The methodology is divided into four phases: (1) planning; (2) modeling; (3) simulation; and (4) analysis. This study is based on data collected from an academic research building project during the first phase. In the modeling phase, the authors used images collected with an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS)for the development of a 3D model of the building and an orthomatic of the construction site with the Pix4D Mapper. These models allowed distances measurements necessary for the jobsite layout modeling. In the simulation phase, Grasshopper ™ integrated with Rhino was used for simuling three different scenarios aiming to optimize transport distances. Through the simulations developed, it was possible to support decision making within lean construction principles.
