Abstract

The indirect evaporative cooling is a bioclimatic design strategy that reduces the temperature without increasing the water vapor in indoor environments, it is a worthy solution even for regions with hot and humid climate. This research analyzed the applicability of indirect evaporative cooling as a passive cooling strategy in three different climatic zones of Paraiba (Aw, BSh and As). At first, a descriptive analysis of the climatic variables was carried out from the EPW files, using data from a Typical Meteorological Year (TMY) of the following cities: João Pessoa, Cabaceiras e São Gonçalo. Then, the performance of a Passive Indirect Evaporative Cooling System (SPREI) was analyzed using the predictive formulas proposed by Givoni and Gonzalez (2009). The results showed that the use of SPREI as a passive cooling strategy was sufficient to eliminate the warm discomfort in the three cities investigated. The means indoors temperatures were up to 1.5 ° C lower than the means outdoors temperatures, while the means maximums outdoors temperatures were up to 5.7 ° C lower.
