Variability and its underlying implications: the case study of construction activity on external masonry

Abstract

In the light of complexity theory, this study assesses variabilities and its implications related to a common activity in construction sites. In order to support this discussion, the execution of external masonry wall and concrete pillars was selected as an applied example. The Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM) has been applied and developed in an iterative and participatory way by a group of five professionals. This study outlines the potential of variability combination and its implications in daily performance at construction sites. Also, results point out the need of management strategies for inherent variability, such as defining slacks and reducing batch size.
