Abstract

Research on thermal comfort to ensure environmental quality is imperative concerning a diversity of pressing matters such as climate change, increased energy consumption in buildings, among others. The study deals with the development of a low-cost microclimatic station for thermal monitoring of indoor environments. Llow-cost microcontrollers and sensors are emerging as an alternative to conventional devices for monitoring environmental comfort, overcoming limitations imposed by the high cost of commercially available equipment. This work presents the prototyping of a low-cost environmental monitoring system, the description of the sensors’ calibration procedure based on comparisons against a reference station, and an example of the system's application. Several prototypes were assembled and tested. Regarding calibration, the differences between the low-cost sensors and the reference can be adjusted by means of a linear regression fit. The final cost of the low-cost station was approximately 800 Brazilian reals. The availability of open-source programming allows other researchers to reproduce the proposed equipment.
