Abstract

This study aims to explore the opportunities and advantages arising from the application of the Inmetro Normative Instruction for the Energy Efficiency Classification of Commercial, Service and Public Buildings (INI-C) as a tool to promote energy efficiency in public schools in the city of Manaus, state of Amazonas, Brazil, with the possibility of extension to other educational institutions in the North region. The implementation of INI-C in public buildings is a mandatory requirement to promote energy efficiency in these locations. By complying with regulations, public schools can play a fundamental role in disseminating a culture of energy efficiency among Brazilian citizens. The analysis involved the survey of architectural and energy consumption parameters. These data were used to calculate the building's total annual thermal load and the results obtained classified the building as category C. To achieve a higher general classification, possible changes to the building's parameters were indicated. The findings of this study can guide professionals involved in retrofit projects or for future school buildings in the selection and specification of materials, in order to comply with legislation and achieve an A rating in energy efficiency, highlighting the importance of applying INI-C as a viable and effective tool to reach those goals.
