Abstract

Green roof is a recommended strategy to improve environmental comfort in open spaces, due to the potential for evaporative cooling resulting from the evapotranspiration process. The objective of this research is to investigate the impact that the implementation of a green roof in a building with courtyards can have on the thermal environment of the building. The research is carried out through computer simulation, using the Envi-met program. The impact of applying the strategy was analyzed through maps of the differences in microclimatic variables considering a scenario with the presence of the green roof and another without its implementation. At the critical time of 2pm, it was observed a potential for reducing air temperature by up to -0.20ºC, increasing relative air humidity by up to +1% and reducing the average radiant temperature by up to -0.1ºC, affecting not only the courtyard environment, but also adjacent internal environments, such as corridors and rooms, also showing the carrying of cooling effects to outside the building. The green roof is a complementary strategy to improve the environmental conditions of buildings with courtyards focused on the sustainable development of buildings.
