In recent decades, although interest in evaluating the environmental performance of historical buildings in Brazil has increased, studies related to the thermal comfort of buildings adapted for educational use are still sporadic. Thus, based on a diagnosis of the current thermal conditions, this study aims to verify and compare the influence of modifying openings on the performance of a historical building used for educational purposes. Considering a building from the early 20th century located in Petrópolis, RJ, computational simulations using the DesignBuilder tool were carried out for the building in its current state and with an alternative model that considers a reconfiguration of the openings. Five classrooms were analyzed on different floors and orientations of the building. As a result, it was observed that the analyzed environments in their original state presented comfortable hours ranging from 27.0% to 34.0% of the occupancy time, with a prevalence of discomfort by cold, mainly due to heat loss through natural ventilation. The proposed modification increased the comfortable hours, ranging from 63.0% to 85.0% of the time. In conclusion, the study presents a viable alternative for improving the thermal comfort in a historical building.
