Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a health condition characterized by deficits in social communication and behavior. According to the WHO, there are an estimated 2 million autistic people in Brazil. The educational institution is the main place where children will have contact with society, after their home, so, it is necessary that their relationship with this place promotes cognitive, social and affective development. Then, the aim of this article was to develop an architectural project for an inclusive educational institution for children with ASD, with a focus on establishing specific design guidelines. The methodology included: deepening of the Sensory and Montessori Design methods and application of recommendations in architectural design, as well as creation of a framework of design recommendations.. It was found that the main design recommendations include sensory zoning, escape spaces and gradual and predictable transition, which are possible to implement in the architectural project. The conclusion is that the architectural space is of great importance in the learning process and that the design recommendations for ASD care can be implemented without difficulty.
