Abstract

At the present moment, the disorganized growth of cities is resulting in critical situations regarding urban flooding. Given this context, it is necessary to adopt measures or solutions that reinforce resilience to floods, such as Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), capable of seeking a balance in the environment and the quality of life of those who live in the affected areas. Therefore, the aim of this study is to identify open spaces in the Jacaré River Watershed in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, which have the potential to be used with NbS techniques for flood mitigation. To this end, the method consists of a detailed diagnosis of the locality, as well as the application of the Index of Susceptibility of the Physical Environment to Flooding to identify the regions of greatest vulnerability. The results of the diagnosis show that the downstream areas, close to the lagoon system and with the highest density of construction, are the most affected by macro and micro drainage failures. It is concluded that, in addition to NbS interventions on a local scale, the watershed should be considered as a planning unit, where the open space system plays a fundamental role in flood control.
