Green areas are essential for ensuring hydrothermal comfort, especially in dense contexts. Urban afforestation in squares also contributes to well-being by influencing the control of the local microclimate, favoring greater use and permanence in these spaces. This article presents a reflective analysis of urban afforestation in squares of Vila Velha-ES, from the verification of the distribution of the percentage of tree shading, data extracted from aerial images, together with the QGIS® geoprocessing software. It also analyzes the thermal performance of squares with better and worse percentages of tree shading, from microclimatic measurements in loco, of temperature and humidity. The results point to the scarcity of afforestation in the squares of the municipality, with an average of arboreal shading less than 16.5% of the squares surface. Those with more trees are in planned neighborhoods, while those with lower percentages are in denser contexts and socioeconomic vulnerability. The microclimatic analyses point to the positive influence of vegetation cover, with variations of about 1°C between squares with better and worse percentages of tree shading. The results indicate the need for interventions to increase urban vegetation cover, essential for promoting quality of life.
