Abstract

Noise pollution is recognized by the World Health Organization as a public health problem, with vehicle traffic being one of the main noise sources in cities. Recent research has highlighted the possibility of an interaction between environmental factors and thermal comfort. This research aims to investigate whether there is an association between the level of discomfort with the sound environment and the thermal perception of people walking outdoors. Volunteers walked a circuit in which points were dynamically monitored in order to capture the different levels of exposure to noise and thermal stress, at the same time that the level of noise annoyance and satisfaction with the thermal environment were assessed through questionnaires. A correlation analysis demonstrated that the noise level decreases with the level of sun exposure. The subjective data show a non-linear association between the average votes for annoyance with noise as the thermal perception increases, an opposite behavior to that outlined by objective measurements. We point out a possible association between thermal and auditory stimuli of people walking in the open air.
