Abstract

Occupant behavior has an impact on the building energy consumption during its operation phase and can also influence on its thermal comfort, for example, through the occupant interaction with windows. Besides the outdoor and indoor temperatures, routine and habits also influence the operation of windows in buildings. However, the representation of the occupant behavior in a building simulation in order to predict its thermal and energy performance is still a challenge, since the available data is scarce. This study aims to analyze scenarios of window operation and its impact on thermal performance of school’s classrooms. A school building was selected for the study. Four scenarios of window’s operation were defined based on results from previous studies and simulated on the software EnergyPlus. The results of the simulations were compared through the variables operative temperature, heating and cooling degreehours and percentage of occupied hours in comfort. The operation of windows affected the thermal comfort of the school building’s users: the degree-hours variation was up to 38% in the comparison between the best and worst scenarios.
