The current energy demand and the concern to reduce the growing energy consumption, have served as a motto for the study of energy efficiency in educational buildings, designed to house a form of teaching that has undergone significant transformations, increasing and overloading obsolete electrical installations. Natural lighting proves to be an alternative, because besides bringing savings to the building, the well-being of users and health benefits, as it corroborates with the circadian cycle, it also presents itself as a quality reference for the reproduction index of Colors. This work is the result of scientific initiation research, which is being held as an “in-training” internship, and aims to evaluate the natural lighting of a project room at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, located in an award-winning modernist building from the 50s, seeking to make better use of this resource. For this, simulation software was used, comparatively, measuring factors related to illuminance. Also, the efficiency of light shelves as an instrument for improving the quality of natural light in the environment was analyzed.
