Abstract

The aim of this study is to assess the thermal performance of a passive heating and cooling system, composed of a radiant-capacitive heating and cooling module powered by a sky radiator/solar collector. The preliminary experimental results of the system, carried out with small test-cells in Curitiba, PR, are presented. We analyze characteristic temperatures, mean cooling potential and the system's ability to offset the need for cooling in summer. The local potential for night-time radiant cooling is evaluated in terms of the sky temperature depression (difference between ambient and sky temperature). The mean cooling potential of the system was confirmed, reaching average values of up to 220 Wh/m2.day. The system reduced overheating by up to 97% with very low energy consumption.
